MASHPEE, MA (3.12.09) - - In early 2010, a new public library in Mashpee, MA will open its doors and welcome patrons to a state-of-the-art building that is both user- and environmentally- friendly. When completed, the library will incorporate energy efficiencies that qualify for LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit coalition of building industry leaders.

"Construction has gotten off to a great start," said Michael Fazio, Project Manager for the architectural firm of J. Stewart Roberts Associates, Inc. of Somerville, MA, who added that the foundations are currently being installed. "We've been very happy with Bufftree's performance and are very excited about this project because it will be one of the first LEED-certified libraries in Massachusetts and the first on Cape Cod."

Examples of items considered in the LEED certification process include: proximity to mass transportation; solar-powered lighting systems and shielded outside lights; a dedicated recycling closet; reuse and recycling of components of the demolished building; and use of certified lumber.

The projected cost for the new library is $6,402,800; the total footage is 20,880 sq.ft. BUFFTREE BUILDING COMPANY JOINS IN GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION
OF TOWN OF WELLFLEET'S NEW FIRE STATION

Ribbon-cutting ceremony marks successful completion of year-long construction process by SouthCoast-based Bufftree Building Company

WELLFLEET, MA (05.21.09) - - A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 3, 2009 marked the Grand Opening of the new Wellfleet Fire and Rescue headquarters constructed by Bufftree Building Company. Members of the Fire Department, town officials, architects and representatives of Bufftree Building Company joined the general public in celebrating the official opening of the new station, located at 10 Lawrence Road in the picturesque Cape Cod town of Wellfleet, MA.

"Bufftree Building Company has been a terrific partner to the Town of Wellfleet and the Wellfleet Fire & Rescue Department in building our new headquarters station," said Fire Chief Daniel Silverman. "From our very first meeting, we were impressed with their organization and their promise to do the job well, to finish on time and to bring the project in within the budget. That impression proved correct. Throughout the building process, the communication among Bufftree, the architects and the Town was outstanding. It quickly became clear that Bufftree is committed to both safety and quality, and that they aren't going to compromise either just to get the job done. This job has been a model of how well a public construction project can go, and the Wellfleet Fire & Rescue Department is extremely pleased with our new station. Should we have the opportunity and the choice, we would use Bufftree Building Company for any construction project."

John J. Keenan, president of the project's architectural firm, Keenan & Kenny Architects, Ltd. of Falmouth, MA, stated that the Fire and Rescue station has been one of their most successful municipal projects in their 27 years in business. "The Town of Wellfleet, Bufftree Building Company, Inc. and W.W. Reich, Inc., the owner's Project Manager, all contributed to a great team effort." He noted that the project was completed in April 2009 ahead of schedule and with less than 2% total Change Order cost additions.

Mr. Keenan said the design includes features that are in harmony with what is considered as the classic Cape Cod style of architecture and with the beauty of its natural surroundings. "The exterior finishes, in keeping with the Town's Zoning By-Laws and the area's tradition, will be primarily natural red cedar shingles and red brick," he noted. "In addition, the existing, approximately 55-ft. tall, 30-year-old dawn redwoods grace the site along Route 6 and have been carefully protected to remain through construction completion."

Mr. Keenan explained that the 18,662-gross-square-feet fire station is comprised of a two-story administration/housing wing building with full basement, a single-story, slab-on-grade containing ambulance and apparatus bays, storage and equipment, and associated areas. The building's engineering and such items as roofing and windows are designed to withstand a Category III (130 mph) hurricane. Electrical systems include full building emergency power and over 80,000 gallons of water storage for building fire protection and apparatus filling.

Bufftree Building Company's Cape Cod portfolio includes the new Bourne Fire Station at the Sagamore Bridge; the new facility for Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists, also in Bourne; and projects for the Wequasset Inn Resort and Golf Club in Chatham. Bufftree has also been the contractor for the world- famous Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution over many years. For more Bufftree news, please visit www.bufftree.com. ###

BUFFTREE BUILDING COMPANY HAS BEGUN WORK ON CONVERSION
OF SWEATER FACTORY INTO VETERANS HOUSING

Project provides needed permanent housing and builds a bridge between veterans in New Bedford and a fallen comrade from Minnesota

NEW BEDFORD, MA (9.23.09) - - United States Army medic Sean Brooke never set foot in New Bedford, but he will have an everlasting presence in the City in the safe, affordable and permanent housing for veterans that bears his name.

Bufftree Building Company is in the process of converting the former Sweater Mill/Carriage House at 280 North Street in New Bedford into the Sean Brooke House that will become home for male and female veterans in need. Expected to be ready for occupancy in spring 2010, the ADA-accessible facility will include 19 one-bedroom apartments plus an addition with a new elevator, entrance vestibule and access stairs to the upper and lower level. Each level will have a laundry room and utility room for the convenience of the veterans.

"As this is an old building undergoing a complete renovation, it may pose some challenges," said Bufftree Building Company Project Manager Stanley P. Cieplik. "The architects have done a great job on the design, and in the end, this will be an incredible facility for our veterans as well as a beautiful addition to the neighborhood." The architect is Durkee, Brown, Viveiros & Werenfels Architects of Providence, R.I.

The journey that brought the Sean Brooke House to the City's west end traveled through Iraq, where Sean served as a combat medic, and would seem to have ended in Hawaii, where the 21-year-old serviceman was tragically killed as the result of a motor vehicle accident in 2005. But a support group at the New Bedford Vet Center, who had come to know Sean through letters and care packages they sent him while he was in the Middle East, wanted to perpetuate his life and service to his country. Welcome Home Veterans Housing joined with Caritas Communities, a nonprofit organization that has developed similar housing in the Boston area, to obtain grants and other donations to fund the project. In attendance at this summer's groundbreaking were members of Sean's family from Minnesota.

NEW BEDFORD, MA (10.15.09) - - Pay a visit to the City's waterfront and you'll see the construction team from SouthCoast-based Bufftree Building Company busily at work on bringing a long-awaited hotel to New Bedford's downtown.

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, a five-story, 106-room facility, is being developed by Lafrance Hospitality Co., which owns a number of inns throughout New England. Located on a 1.6 acre parcel at 16 Front Street, across from the Bourne Counting House on Merrill's Wharf, the hotel will connect to a historic, granite whale oil refinery building that will be preserved and converted into a conference center to accommodate 150 people. "This project is special for our Bufftree team because we know that in addition to building a first-class place for visitors to stay right in the heart of the City, we're creating an opportunity for the City to showcase all that it has to offer. The downtown area is experiencing tremendous growth, and Bufftree is pleased to be part of the resurgence of this historic area."

Bufftree Building Buzzards Bay Center for the Coalition for Buzzards Bay

New Bedford, MA (11/05/09) - - Nestled in the heart of the City of New Bedford's Waterfront Historic District and National Park, sits the latest "Green" project being constructed by Bufftree Building Company, Inc. The Coalition for Buzzards Bay has enlisted the services of Bufftree for the rehabilitation of their new headquarters on Front Street. The building, originally known as the Coggeshall Counting House, was built in 1832 housing a chandlery, counting rooms and sail and rigging lofts. Historical features of the building will be replicated as close to its original character as possible.

The most exciting part of the project will be the many environmentally friendly features. With conservation being one of the major goals of the Coalition for Buzzards Bay, it makes sense that their new headquarters, The Buzzards Bay Center, incorporate as many green elements as possible. "Bufftree Building Company is thrilled to be a part of this project" states Scott Costa, co-owner of Bufftree. "Something old will become new again. From recycling parts of the original building to adding so many environmentally friendly components, the building will be one of the greenest in the area. Plus, it's right here in New Bedford."

The architect for the project is Richard Renner Architects located in Sherborn, MA.

Bufftree Building Company is currently building the new Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, also located on New Bedford's waterfront. For more information about Bufftree, log on to their website: www.bufftree.com .

BUFFTREE BUILDING COMPANY IS RECOGNIZED FOR ROLE IN
"TOWN OF HARWICH SUCCESS STORY"

Chairman of town's Building Committee chronicles journey that led to "the first true Public Safety Facility on Cape Cod"

HARWICH, MA (11.18.09) - - For the Town of Harwich's Police Department, the move from its old, antiquated building into its newly constructed quarters next door was only a matter of steps, but the distance between the Public Safety Committee recommendation to replace the 1960-era Police Station and the completion of the state-of-the-art Public Safety Facility was a seven-year journey that was traveled by retired engineer and Harwich resident, Ray Jefferson.

As the chairman of the six-member, all-volunteer Harwich Police Station Building Committee appointed by the Board of Selectmen, Ray calls the completion of the $9 million new Police Station and Joint Dispatch Facility joined to the Fire Station a "Town of Harwich success story" and "the first true Public Safety Facility on Cape Cod."

Ray is quick to credit Bufftree Building Company's role in contributing to the project's success. "The total project was completed ahead of schedule, with minimal change orders and within budget, thanks to the outstanding working relationship between the general contractor Bufftree, the Project Manager and the town's Building Committee," he says. "Bufftree constructed a top-quality building that is being highly praised by both police and fire personnel. The final Certificate of Occupancy was issued in early November. The Project Manager stated he has never seen a CO issued this early in a project of this size."

As Ray describes, the entire process entailed a series of critical steps. Through the issuance of an RFP, as required by state mandate for municipal projects, the Building Committee selected Construction Management Services (CMS) as the Project Manager. Next, after visiting several newly constructed police and fire stations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the Building Committee selected the architectural firm of Kaestle Boos Associates of Foxboro, MA, for its considerable experience in designing police and fire stations. Ray says the lessons learned during the course of these visits greatly assisted the committee in choosing the architect. Six months of needs assessment produced the final drawings for a 21,000 sq.ft., two-story, basement and renovated dispatch area in the existing fire station. With the selection of Bufftree as the general contractor, the last step was getting funding approval at the May 2008 Town Meeting.

Ray notes that Bufftree came highly recommended by the CMS Project Manager and the Town of Wellfleet, for which Bufftree just built a new Fire & Rescue headquarters that opened this past spring. With Bufftree on board, the construction process encompassed three phases: the Joint Dispatch center was operational in July 2009; the new Police Station, in early August 2009; and the final phase site work was completed in September 2009.

Calling it a "showplace for other Massachusetts towns looking to find how we were able to get the police and fire departments to join into a Public Safety Facility with jointly shared areas," Ray explains the common areas as the public lobby, the EOC/Training room, the records keeping room, the Joint Dispatch, the fitness room, the male and female locker rooms, the vehicle maintenance areas and the small vehicle and equipment storage areas.

At the Building Committee's final meeting, Ray says, the members burst into applause for Bufftree's outstanding and complete cooperation and gave Mike Woodby, Bufftree's project superintendent, a standing ovation. ###
